Safety Procedure Rules
Safety is of greatest concern here at Casey Tree Experts, Inc. We work hard to ensure that all of our employees understand why safety is so important. We have several different programs such as Talegate Safety and TCIA that our employees must take to keep their employee status with Casey Tree Experts, Inc. All the programs are to make sure that the employees are fully aware of all procedures. We hold each employee responsible to uphold the rules and to report any unsafe conditions to the foreman/supervisor assigned to the task at hand. From there it is the foreman/supervisor responsibility to handle the situation at hand. Each foreman/supervisor is responsible to report any injuries and conditions. All employees must use adequate safety precautions, devices and gear necessary for the project at hand.
Each employee and subcontractor must sign and agree to all the safety rules and procedures before starting work with Casey Tree Experts, Inc.
Violations of these rules may result in suspension and possible termination.
1. It is the policy of Casey Tree Experts to prevent accidents from occurring, not correcting conditions after accidents have occurred.
2. Proper P.P.E (Personal Protection Equipment) must be worn at all times. Hard hates must be worn at all times on the job site, even inside cabs. If you are missing any P.P.E let the foreman know so he can give you the proper P.P.E. or order the P.P.E needed at your cost.
3. Seat belts are to be worn at all times even when operating equipment, regardless of the terrain or conditions.
4. A shirt is to be worn at all times as protection against scratches, sunburn, and excessive evaporation of perspiration.
5. Gloves are to be worn at all times when working with cable. They should also be worn to protect against splinters, hand burns, and other injuries to the hands.
6. To prevent unsafe reflexes, employees should not come to work excessively tired or under the influence of alcohol and drugs. No alcoholic beverages are allowed while on the job site or in company vehicles and equipment.
7. Walk completely around your truck and equipment before operating them. This will give you the chance to see if there are any leaks, broken or missing parts, or cuts in tires. Be sure to check and see if anyone is working under or around the truck and equipment.
8. Any fuel, grease, oil, or water on the deck should be avoided. If necessary, walk on the substance with extreme caution until the substance can be removed.
9. Truck drivers and equipment operators should report any malfunction of their equipment as soon as possible. Drivers and operators should stop operating immediately if the problem is unsafe or will further damage the machine.
10. Every person who operates or drives should always look while backing up. It is the operator’s responsibility when backing up. This should prevent any backing accidents. If possible use a spotter during these times.
11. When getting off you machine, even if for a minute, lower your implements and lock the brakes.
12. Never jump off you machine, always climb onto and off of your machine. Be sure you have a handhold and foothold.
13. Employees other than the operator will not be permitted to ride on tractors or other heavy construction equipment.
14. When work is being preformed along roads and right of ways, the up most care shall be taken not to cause hazards to the public’s safety, well being, or health.
15. No one can run a chain saw until Qualified by a supervisor. Do not surprise or touch anyone that is operating a chainsaw. This distraction could cause serious injuries.
16. Each chainsaw operator must be constantly alert, insuring their own safety and the safety of their coworkers.
17. Chainsaw operators should know the saw’s ability, limitations, and potential hazards. Select the proper sized equipment for the job.
18. Use correct procedures for starting a saw, always maintain secure footing, and watch for kickbacks by trees and branches. The experienced saw operator often injures himself by taking chances.
19. Chainsaws are not to be left running unattended under any circumstances.
20. Chainsaws will be cut off while refueling and while the operator is walking from one area to another.
21. Gasoline is to be transported in approved safety cans.
22. Make sure chainsaw blades are sharp, clean, and regularly maintained.
23. Use safety glasses at all times while using a chainsaw.
24. Chainsaw operators should not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
25. Never brush away sawdust with your hand while the saw is operating.
26. All trees should be inspected before tree work is done. Always check for rotting, slits, dead limbs, electrical wires, and any other hazards (electrical wires). A dead, broken, or damaged top can fall at any time without warning. Chainsaw operators should maintain saws in good working condition and store equipment in a dry secure location where they won’t be tampered with.
27. Employees should always watch out for their coworkers and keep safety in mind at all times. Employees are to render every possible aid to safe operations.
28. Be alert at all times to any unsafe conditions or practices, be sure to report any concerns as soon as possible, also notify fellow coworkers.
29. If you have an accident, regardless of size, report it to your supervisor immediately. All accidents must be reported and documented with 24 hours. (If there is a witness then they to need to report and sign the documents)
30. Always know what you will do in case of a fire. Be alert and ready for it. Know where the fire extinguishers are and how to use them.
31. Every person should know what they are to do in case of an accident. You may save someone’s life. Know where the first aid supplies are, how to call for an ambulance and who on the crew is trained in first aid.
32. When running heavy equipment around mulch, dust or dry ground, before you start your machine, check your motor and etc. for accumulated debris on the motor and etc. This must be blown off. Grinding machines and support equipment must have a water source and a fire extinguisher. (Example) all grinders must have 2-5 gallon buckets of water on the machine at all time.
33. When working around dust, paint or any airborne particles all employees must wear N.I.O.S.H approved respirator suited to the particular agent. Example, paint fumes require charcoal filters and if you can smell the paint you know it is not working. Any employees who do not understand proper maintenance and use of a particular respirator should inform their supervisor to be trained prior to work.
34. You must wear you seatbelt, it is the law!
35. Cell phones are not permitted to be used while driving. Personal phones are to be used during lunch or brakes only.
36. If any one has any suggestions that may improve this list, please come forward or notify management to make adjustments because safety is our number ONE concern.
